Some of these courses are mandatory and others are optional. However all of them
are designed to give the best training available in order to keep crews working
safely and effectively.
Our courses are suitable for crew on commercial fishing boats and all have
either STCW'95 or Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) validation. Whilst not
mandatory for those operating either commercially or for leisure in the
yachting sector, they are suitable for the development of skills,
knowledge and safe working practises for yacht skippers and crew.

Course content:
An intensive course of study involving the use of computer simulation and live equipment.
Practical application sessions are used to allow the candidate to put into practice the knowledge and skills developed whilst on the course.
Mock examination papers are set as homework in preparation for the written examinations.
The course covers three main areas: • Regulations and procedures, • Demonstration and maintenance of equipment, • ‘Safety of Life at Sea’ and practical operations.
The certificate qualifies the holder to operate a suitably licensed marine radiotelephony, radio telex or satellite mobile earth station.
The course allows the candidate to acquire detailed practical knowledge of the equipment of a ships station, Digital Selective Calling (DSC), the principles of Narrow Band Direct Printing, Telex over Radio Systems and to INMARSAT systems. Operational procedures and practices and the satisfactory exchange of communications relevant to the safety of life at sea are also covered in the syllabus.

Is this course mandatory? Yes. Required for all commercial fishermen. Also suitable for commercial boat operators and crew. Anyone intending to work on a commercial fishing vessel of any size is required to hold the Sea Survival certification before undertaking work on board a vessel. There are no exemptions for this course either for the size of fishing boat or age of the person.
Fishermen are then required to complete MCA approved Fire Fighting and First Aid within 3 months of completing the Sea Survival course. Those who are new to the industry and taking these qualifications for the first time are also required to complete the mandatory Health and Safety Course. Those already commercially fishing must complete the Safety Awareness course instead.

This course is a component of the forthcoming MCA Under 16.5 metre Skipper's Ticket and covers chartwork, navigation and signals.
Successful completion of this course will go towards the overall requirements of the Under 16.5 metre Ticket certificate. Holders of this certificate can also keep watch on larger vessels.
For a short period of time this course and its examination will be free to participants. Candidates will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. A £50 deposit, fully refundable on course completion, is required BEFORE attendance. |
