Pre-requisites:

A minimum VHF/SRC certification. Knowledge of the phonetic alphabet. Computer keyboard literate. Study the notes in the course joining instructions.
Course content:

An intensive course of study involving the use of computer simulation and live equipment.

Practical application sessions are used to allow the candidate to put into practice the knowledge and skills developed whilst on the course.

Mock examination papers are set as homework in preparation for the written examinations.

The course covers three main areas: • Regulations and procedures, • Demonstration and maintenance of equipment, • ‘Safety of Life at Sea’ and practical operations.

The certificate qualifies the holder to operate a suitably licensed marine radiotelephony, radio telex or satellite mobile earth station.

The course allows the candidate to acquire detailed practical knowledge of the equipment of a ships station, Digital Selective Calling (DSC), the principles of Narrow Band Direct Printing, Telex over Radio Systems and to INMARSAT systems.
Operational procedures and practices and the satisfactory exchange of communications relevant to the safety of life at sea are also covered in the syllabus.

Is this course mandatory? Yes. The MCA have confirmed that the GMDSS ROC is acceptable for STCW-95 re-validations. (See Part 4 MGN 4(M) - Marine Guidance Notes on Training and Certification) The GMDSS ROC wishing to achieve MCA 200 tonnes certification and Pilots, Harbour Masters and marine shore staff wishing to maintain valid seagoing qualifications.
Examination type: The examination has 3 elements
. Radio Procedures - (written or oral paper)
. Voice exercise - Simulated Distress Communications
. Operational Simulation - Candidate demonstrates the use of GMDSS equipment and knowledge of radio regulations.
Pre-requisites:

. Fluency in English : Although there are no nationality requirements, all candidates must be fluent in both English and the phonetic alphabet.
The MCA grants no exemption to holding a GMDSS certificate i.e. for holders of Aeronautical or marine VHF or old style Restricted radio operator certificates.

Is this course mandatory? Yes. Required for all commercial fishermen. Also suitable for commercial boat operators and crew.
Anyone intending to work on a commercial fishing vessel of any size is required to hold the Sea Survival certification before undertaking work on board a vessel. There are no exemptions for this course either for the size of fishing boat or age of the person.

Fishermen are then required to complete MCA approved Fire Fighting and First Aid  within 3 months of completing the Sea Survival course. Those who are new to the industry and taking these qualifications for the first time are also required to complete the mandatory Health and Safety Course. Those already commercially fishing must complete the Safety Awareness course instead.
Examination type: Practical pool exercises must be completed.

Course content:

The RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance course aims to teach boat owners the basic principles of the marine diesel engine, it's operation and maintenance.

This course exceeds the RYA specification syllabus. It comprises classrom sessions, delivering practical demonstrations with cutaway engines and real maintenance on a running engine in our training workshop.

This is a hands-on course in preventative maintenance and problem solving. We teach students the skills necessary to restart a stopped engine at sea and the routine diesel engine maintenance tasks that help keep your engine in top condition and ensures your engine functions correctly when you need it most.

We have a number of marine diesel engine component parts to illustrate the course syllabus
The course syllabus comprises:
Principles of the diesel engine
Naturally aspirated and turbocharged diesel engines
The fuel system
The cooling system
The air system
Diesel engine electrical systems
Fault finding.

An operational marine diesel engine is set up on a rig. Students replace fuel filters, belts and raw water pump impellers. When these tasks have been completed the engine can be run up and checked.

Failed and corroded components are on display to illustrate the consequences of poor maintenance.
